Rental apartments and houses can be tricky. You move into a space that’s going to be your home for a year or more, and you want it to really feel like your home. But you don’t want to lose your security deposit. Unfortunately, painting is against a lot of lease agreements, so it’s not an option if you want to get your deposit back when you move out. So what can you do? How can you bring more color into your rental without painting? Check out a few of our favorite tips.
Create Your Own Gallery
First of all, you can add a lot of color and really brighten up your space without painting if you just get a little bit creative with your wall art. You don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of expensive pieces of art, either. Instead, you can make your own, and you don’t have to be a 21st century Picasso to do it, either.
For example, you could grab some large, inexpensive canvases panels and paint them or cover them in your favorite wallpaper. Then hang them side-by-side for a fun pop of color that’ll add dimension and personality, too.
You could also have pictures of your family printed on canvas, metal, or glass for an artistic take on the family portrait. Then you can hang these colorful images in the living room or in your front foyer to add color and personality to your space. Get creative with your wall hangings, and your home will start to look brighter and more like your space in no time.
Create an Indoor Garden
Bring the outdoors in with a beautiful indoor garden that will bring pops of green and other lovely colors to your home. You don’t have to go traditional, either. In fact, you can grow bulbs like tulips, lilies and other beautiful flowers in glass vases.
Or you could plant a garden in a window box to give your home a fresher, more vibrant look that you can enjoy from inside or outside.
Add an Accent Wall With Removable Wallpaper
Removable wallpaper has become incredibly popular lately. You can find it in a wide variety of patterns and colors, and you can even get large removable wall decals that are almost more art than wallpaper. And the best part? You can just peel it right off when you move out, and your landlord will never know!
Have Fun With Throw Pillows and Area Rugs
Another great way to add color to your home is to mix up your upholstery game. We’re not saying that you have to reupholster your entire sofa, but how about some new throw pillows? You can choose complementary colors that add a splash of something different. And you can tie the room together with an area rug that matches your throw pillows and complements the rest of your furniture, too.
Finally, you can’t go wrong with decorative mirrors. Mirrors add light and the illusion of more space. Plus, you can find them in some gorgeous shapes with really fun frames. The right mirror could add personality and give you a place to check your hair before you run out the door for the day!
Try these tips out in your rental and see how much more color, vibrancy, and personality you can inject into your home without doing anything to lose your security deposit. Have fun, and happy decorating!
