Little Known Ways to Find Cool Lofts for Rent in NYC

It’s no secret that New York has some of the highest rental rates in the country. That really doesn’t mean that you have to live in a shoebox or share your space with five roommates, though. If you know how to look, you can find a lot of cool lofts for rent in NYC that will fit your lifestyle and your budget. Here are a few of our favorite ways to land that loft you’ve been dreaming of.

Know Where to Look

First of all, if you’re looking for a loft, you’re basically looking for a building that used to be a commercial site (like a factory or a warehouse) that’s been converted into residential living. These are usually in areas that are transitioning from industrial to residential, though some of them have long since made the transition and then some. Those areas are going to have the highest rent and the most established lofts that everyone in the city already knows about.

If you’re looking for cool lofts that aren’t already ultra-established and popular, stay away from Williamsburg. In fact, your best bets are almost all going to be in Manhattan, but you’ll still have a pretty great range of options for neighborhoods to live in.

For example, you can find a lot of pretty great deals on lofts for rent in NYC in the Flatiron District, on the West Side, in Lower Manhattan, on the Lower East Side, and in Harlem.

You can also find them in SoHo and Tribeca, but while those lofts are really cool, they’re also more expensive than some of the other neighborhoods we’ve mentioned.

Start Searching ASAP

Next, when do you have to move? If you start your search less than a month before you have to be out of your current place or before you start your new job in the Financial District, you could end up with a less than desirable place or one that’s a bit more expensive than you’d hoped.

When it comes to finding the best lofts for rent in NYC, time is not on your side. Start your search as early as possible, and use as many resources as you can get your hands on. A good broker can be a real lifesaver, too.

Have Your Paperwork Ready to Go

The thing about cool lofts for rent in NYC is that they aren’t ever available for very long. If you find a place that you love, you want to be able to fill out an application and get it turned in immediately.

That means, when you go to look at a loft, you want to have all of the necessary paperwork and documentation completed and with you.

What you need may vary from property to property, but in general expect to bring:

  • A clear photocopy of your driver’s license or government-issued ID.
  • Two recent pay stubs, or a job offer letter (co-signed by you and your company).
  • Certified check(s) for the first and last months’ rent, as well as the deposit.

If you have a copy of the leasing application, go ahead and fill it out before you arrive, as well. Basically, this ensures that you can jump on the loft of your dreams if you love it. If not, you can keep looking.

Don’t Try to Go Loft Hunting on the Weekend

Finally, expect to take some time during the week, during normal business hours, to look at lofts for rent in NYC. It might be more convenient for you to do it on the weekends, but most property management firms and many landlords will only show properties from 8:00 to 5:00, Monday through Friday.

Plus, if you look during the week, you can get a good idea of what the neighborhood is like when you’ll be coming and going to and from work.
